2 March 2012
Kuching, 2 March 2012 – Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), the importer and distributor of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) in Malaysia, officially launched the new Mitsubishi Triton VGT today. With a new powerful and economical engine with Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), Malaysia’s most awarded pick-up truck is also now the most powerful pick-up truck in its class.
Identical to the unit of the recently upgraded Pajero Sport VGT SUV, the new 2.5-litre powertrain diesel engine provides optimal turbo aspect ratio at any given speed, harnessing the power of the exhaust gas, and ensuring a constant delivery of additional fresh air to the engine for optimum performance.
As a result of the VGT and new engine management, maximum power is significantly boosted to 178 PS at 4,000 rpm, while maximum torque rises to 350 Nm.
Not only are the figures higher than before, all 350 Nm of pulling power is now available earlier in the rev range (at 1,800 rpm) and for a significantly longer period, all the way up to 3,500 rpm. This translates to stronger acceleration and improved drivability while maintaining great full efficiency.
From the exterior, the tough and stylish looks of the Triton has been further enhanced with a front bumper extender, matte black roll bar and sporty 17-inch alloy wheels. The new Triton VGT is Bluetooth and iPod compatible. Parking is also made simpler with front corner sensors with display visual.
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia expects to sell 250 units of Triton VGT per month. At present, MMM is selling close to 700 units (all Triton variants) per month.
MMM expects 20 per cent increase in Triton sales and aims to increase its market share to 22 per cent this year.
Last year in 2011, the Triton pick-up truck sales volume achieved 8,299 units, with an 18.9 per cent share in the segment, making Mitsubishi Triton the second most popular pick-up truck in the country.
For East Malaysia, total sales amounting to 1,641 units of Triton was achieved last year, up from sales of 1,504 units in 2010.
“The Triton, widely acknowledged as one of the best handling pick-up trucks in the market, has been a great success since its debut in Malaysia in 2006. The Triton created a new trend with the bold ruggedness of a powerful engine combined with original styling, ride comfort, spacious cabin, and enhanced safety features. And to date, it has found more than 30,000 proud owners. Being the most powerful in its class, the new Triton VGT is set to increase the Triton’s popularity,” said Tetsuya Oda, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.
Besides the new engine, the Triton VGT drivetrain partner has been upgraded as well, which comes standard with a 5-Speed automatic gearbox with Sports Mode. This is one forward ratio more than its predecessor, and the segment exclusive Sports Mode allows manual selection of gears for better control, giving drivers the best of both worlds – refined on-road handling and rugged off-road performance. With this Sports Mode, the Triton VGT has set to strengthen its position as an active lifestyle pick-up truck.
The brand new drivetrain doesn’t just improve performance. With the new VGT engine and extra gear ratio, fuel consumption stands at an impressive 14.4 km/l at a 90 km/h cruise, which is the same as the current 2.5L AT variant, 14.5km/l.
Available in three colors, White Solid, Black Mica and Cool Silver Metallic, the fully imported Triton VGT is priced at RM105, 997.10 (Peninsular Malaysia*) on the road inclusive of insurance. Buyers will enjoy a 3-Year warranty and 2-Year free maintenance package for hassle free ownership experience. *Sarawak: RM105, 812.10/ Sabah: RM105, 721.50
Offering a wider option for customers, the new Triton VGT will complement the current Triton line-up, consisting of the Triton 2.5-litre 4×4 with automatic and manual transmissions, Triton Standard 2.5-litre 4×4 manual and Triton Lite 2.5-litre 4×2 manual.
Standard Features
The Triton offers the best in class turning radius of 5.9 metres. It is also fitted with a Hybrid Limited Slip Differential (LSD) that gives excellent off-road response. Hybrid LSD combines the torque-sensing benefit of helical gears and the speed-sensing of a viscous coupling unit, all designed to work alongside ABS and EBD, which are standard.
Power is channelled to the wheels via Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD system which allows the driver to ‘shift on the fly’ from 2WD to 4WD at speeds of up to 100km/h.
Unique to the Triton, its informative RV meter displays travel data such as range, average speed, fuel consumption and also a digital compass, barometer, altimeter and outer temperature.
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has a total of 50 showrooms nationwide, out of which 26 are 3S Centres and 34 service centres. In East Malaysia, there are a total of 13 showroom out of which 10 are 3S centres. There are plans to open another 2 more 3S centres in Kota Kinabalu.
